Wonderful and professional staff made our stay easy and enjoyable. Great location.

Coffee area was lovely

The Haunted Hotel

The Van Gilder gave me spooky Haunted vibes but I thought it was great as an experience because of the hauntedness. It would have been better if I was able to check in early and check out later so I didn’t have to carry my bags around Seward. Overall conveniently located lower end of town. Very close walk to waters edge, aquarium, coffee shop and other restaurants and stores. Also the Free Shuttle stop #9 is just outside and across the street.

Recepcionist was very helpful

Don’t stay here

The staff wouldn’t answer the emergency line they gave me if there were any problems. The window wouldn’t lock and it was next to the sketchy alley and it was moldy!

Very dilapidated old hotel with peeling paint inside and out. Creepy old windows without screens. Ran out of hot water during a short shower. The staff were very nice

2/10 Poor

We were really disappointed. The photos didn’t reflect the fact that the hotel outside paint is falling apart big time. The bed sheets had not been changed so we had to ask for them to be immediately changed. This has been done right away but we stayed with the bad feeling. On the positive side, shower water is perfectly warm, the hotel is quiet and it is great to be downtown. Overall at that night rate we would have expected much better.

Great location

This hotel is very old 108 years old but it is in very good condition and loved staying there however since it's old there is no elevator and it is 3 story high so lots of stairs

This is a quaint old hotel with a lot of history. It doesn’t have some of the conveniences of newer hotels but was a great experience. Staff was very helpful

Unique 1916 hotel near the historical downtown and across from the shuttle stop. Didn't like the flat pillows.

Old building, had some mold issues, covered up with strong cleaner. Towels and bed questionably not cleaned prior to our visit. Hot water's sparse, don’t shower during prime times to do so.

6/10 Good

OK, not terrible, but extremely dated.

We needed a clean place with running water and electricity. This place worked. It's not glamorous by any stretch of the imagination but works for an overnight stay. Staff is super friendly and accommodating, there is a very nice sitting area with communal refrigerators. This property could use some renovation. With some TLC, this property could be a 5 star premium property. In its current condition, 2 stars is a stretch. Staff and reserved parking make it 3 stars.

Hotel is old and rustic so elders know that there is no elevator and stairs are required.

4/10 Fair

This property is old and needs upgrading. The service needs improvement as well.
Ivy, 2-night trip

6/10 Good

We have stayed at the Van Gilder at various times over the years and we know to expect the basics. They keep the rooms clean and the staff is helpful and friendly. It's an old building with lots of history. The rooms are a little small without a lot of storage or places to hang stuff. The beds are comfortable and we always get a good night's sleep. The Van Gilder is in downtown Seward and it's easy to get to restaurants and shopping or visit the Sealife Center. All within easy walking distance.
Julia, 1-night trip

2/10 Poor

The property might be old and have a good rating but the property is very poorly managed they don’t even clean the rooms there is a lot of dirt behind the cart they cover it with a curtain due to that dirt we felt so uncomfortable to complaint there is none the plug points don’t work it’s a horrible experience

Old building, not clean enough, no elevator, small room, indifferent staff
Bowen, 1-night trip

10/10 Exceptional

I liked that the property was of historic importance. However it is definitely not worth the value because the property upkeep is awful ☹️. The property management company should be ashamed of themselves for not bringing this property up to code and for not modernizing it to show off its historic features. The property has potential
Gwendolyn, 2-night trip

,The place was so dirty that any place that a vacuum cleaner could not get to without moving the furniture, the carpet had so much dust on it, that it looked gray. It was supposed to be maroon. I would not recommend anyone stay here.
