Short break in Dunkeld

Hotel in lovely location on Dunkeld Main Street. Helpful and friendly staff. Nice room. However the place needs some TLC with worn / uneven carpets, windows and cupboards in communal areas needing repair. Dunkeld is a very nice place. Plenty of lovely cafes and restaurants nearby and lovely walking both along the river from the town and further afield to Loch of the Lowes and The Hermitage (NTS).

Nice and central

Booked the annexe, on arriving looked pretty grim, but inside was clean and welcoming, we got upgraded to the main hotel due to an error on room allocation. The staff were all friendly, pleasant and the hotel was clean. It is in need of some upgrading, improvments, but for the price we paid it was worth it. The restaurant was clean, space between tables, the food was okay, we only ate in one night. We enjoyed a game of pool. Overall we would go back, nice and central.

the staff were friendly, but the room was very basic, the gutter outside the door needed maintenance which caused water to pour out during the night, keeping us awake. Lovely location, but the annex rooms need a lot more love.

6/10 Good

Good Afternoon I am writing to express my disappointment regarding my stay at the Royal Dunkeld Hotel on Saturday, 13th September. As a long-standing member, I rarely raise complaints, but unfortunately, my experience on this occasion fell well below acceptable standards. The hotel was dirty, and the service was extremely poor—I even witnessed two families leave because they were unable to get any assistance. Most concerning was the lack of cleanliness and maintenance. Fresh dog urine was present on the reception carpet and remained uncleaned for over 24 hours. In addition, there was no running hot water, forcing me to take a cold shower in a unit that was very worn and dated. This experience was both unpleasant and disappointing. I would be grateful to know whether similar complaints have been raised about this hotel, as I would certainly not recommend it to fellow members in its current condition. I trust you will look into this matter and I look forward to your response. Kind regards John

Welcoming

Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Older hotel but comfy and welcoming.

A fine comfortable stopover, very clean and adequate for our short time there. Outside annexe away from main facilities but adequate for our needs. Breakfast average choice.

Daffers

The staff were great the restaurant was super. Happy to give extra towels, milk etc. The reception staff gave us lots of information on local places and a large selection of information pamphlets in reception plus a large living room type room on the first floor with comfy sofas.
6-night trip

8/10 Very good

The hotel was conveniently located and clean. It was not easy to find staff to check in or get room supplies. The room was clean, but spare. No towel rack, no tissue, no pictures on walls. Lacked appeal. Seemed like a dorm room. Breakfast choices were plentiful and well prepared. Pub was cozy and convenient. Pub and dining staff were friendly and helpful.
Gregory, 2-night trip

2/10 Poor

Not Rushing Back

The hotel room was dirty and dusty, with curtains hanging off the rail. Room was cramped with bathroom only 2 steps from bed. Toilet was dirty and shower had black mould on bottom and round ill-fitting door. Rest of the hotel was dated and dirty. We paid for 2 nights but left after one, cancelling breakfast also as we decided hygiene may be an issue in the kitchen, if rest of hotel was the standard. Receptionist was pleasant enough but didn't ask why we were leaving early. We've stayed in a lot of hotels over the years and don't mind dated decor etc but the red line is cleanliness. The hotel is damaging Dunkeld's reputation as a charming, friendly little town. Melville Hotels need to have a good look at themselves.

6/10 Good

Had an overall good stay at hotel with my one year old son. Just a beautiful location on the map and our favourite place to visit, Dunkeld. We were in the Annex which is just, well, one room and toilet/electric shower. My opinion would be a slight bit work needing done more to the decorative side of things. Staff were nice for basically 30seconds but that’s all I had to deal with them to be fair, but very nice overall.
Paul, 3-night trip

2/10 Poor

Overpriced and grotty. Beware of legionnaires!!

Overpriced for a room that barely could fit in a double bed. TV swamped the room. Paint peeling off walls and window frames, with black mould on them. Bathroom the size of a wardrobe in which you had to be a contortionist to use the toilet if you were taller than a midget. Luke warm (maybe 22-23C) “hot” water for a shower the next morning. At that temperature the water system will be prone to legionnaires disease. No one at reception to complain to. We had booked breakfast with them, but if the chefs had no hot water to wash their hands, what would the kitchen cleanliness be like? We cancelled breakfast with them and had a lovely breakfast at May’s cafe down the road. Avoid. Camp under the bridge over the river instead.

6/10 Good

The accommodation I thought I booked was for two twin rooms in the hotel, but what got was two very small twin rooms in chalets out the back. The chalets looked like large shed which had been thrown up and the area surrounding the building was pretty grubby, with weeds all round, water dripping from the gutters, the windows weren’t very clean, the paving surface area into the respective rooms was very poor. Cracked, broken surface, just basically not very nice or inviting. The food and service in the hotel was good, but at breakfast time there was no hot water in the urn to make tea or coffee. The urn was on but no water coming out as it had run down so low and obviously hadn’t been filled up, either first thing or the previous evening.

Spoiled by horrendous staff member

3 rooms booked for myself, sons and partners - in annexe ok for price. Small but ok. No 557 radiator won’t turn down so window had to be open & cistern loud for too long after flush HOWEVER ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED AT YOUR STAFF FOR I FEEL TRYING TO SCAM US INTO PAYING FOR BREAKFAST WHEN ALREADY PAID FOR via Hotels.com. I woke 0830, checked all room info ie what time breakfast etc Nothing looked at website- no info - then spotted FB advertising breakfast 8-12. At 1020 we all went into main building when this person wearing black hoody asked if he could help. I said in for breakfast and he said oh we have a policy - residents have to eat before 10am otherwise they have to pay. I pointed out no where does it advise us of that in the room, nobody said at check in and he said I know I’ve fed this back etc. I said we’d paid for breakfast so going to have it. Breakfast room empty. went in and a very nice gentleman who def looked like he worked there came and took room numbers took our keys and order. The other person came in only once our food being set on table to say can we come to some agreement.. I couldn’t believe his attitude. When I said unacceptable he said ‘only compromise you’ll do - is not pay ‘ we already had - also asked if we’d been in b4 10am was it the same breakfast- yes . The way he spoke to us was disgusting and he ended up walking out shouting ‘ this is a joke man’and he was staff ! I’m disgusted and will make complaint

The room was fine, but very small. We were in the annex outback. The staff was not very accommodating.

Worst hotel ever stayed in

The hotel was filthy, carpets worn. No hot water so had to have a cold shower. Water stains on bedroom ceiling. Overall a very unpleasant stay.
James, 1-night trip

Avoid.

From start to finish this hotel was a problem, from going into the "Annex" and looking at a lodge that can only be described as a "servant room" the over powering smell of mold, damaged curtains and pillows that are cushions for a sofa, I had to ask to be moved room because this was an expensive stay, the porter agreed and moved me to the "queen suite" which is inside the hotel and is a tiny little room with two single beds, porter made a remark to me and my mother about pushing the single beds together which was very inappropriate and given the opportunity, I would have demanded to cancel and refund my stay if I wasn't staying for an important occasion. As for the "Queen suite", this is a standard room by any other definition in hotels, it was small, uncomfortable and one pillow on two single beds, the other pillows being the same as the "annex", cushions for a sofa.
